72-year-old woman found killed in Preet Vihar house

murder1A 72-year-old woman, who once worked for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), was found murdered in her East Delhi home Sunday, police said. The house, in Preet Vihar, had also been robbed.

“Suman Bala Bhatnagar’s body was found by her tenants, who called police. A case of murder and robbery has been registered and investigations are on,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Ajay Kumar said.

Bhatnagar had retired as a section officer in MEA. Her husband had passed away three years ago and she had been living alone in the two-storey house. Her son works at a private firm in Chennai. One of her daughters lives in Dilshad Gardens and the other in Geeta Colony; both have been informed of her death.

Police suspect that Bhatnagar, who lived on the ground floor of the house, was killed on Saturday afternoon. According to police, Bhatnagar’s tenant, staying on the first floor, went to her house on Sunday to ask her to switch on the water pump.

She found the door to her house bolted from outside. When she opened it and went in, she found her body on a bed.

Police said Bhatnagar had suffered severe head injuries and had strangulation marks near her neck. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. “Prima facie, we found no signs of forced entry. The attacker might have been known to the victim. A few articles, including some money, are missing. The woman’s daughters are trying to find out what has been stolen. The tenants are also being questioned. Everyone, from workers to delivery boys who used to visit the house, are being questioned too,” a police officer said.
