Odisha: Man kills doc to ‘avenge’ nephew’s death

A man and his two accomplices murdered a doctor in Odisha’s Sonepur district because he suspected the doctor’s injection killed his nephew, police have said.

Durbadala Mishra, additional district medical officer (ADMO) of Sonepur district headquarters hospital, was found lying in a pool of blood in front of his house on Sunday night with his throat slit.

“The police have arrested one of the accused and are searching for two others including the main accused. A sharp-edged weapon used in the murder and few live bullets have also been seized,” Sonepur superintendent of police Sarah Sharma told reporters on Tuesday night after cracking the case.

Investigators found a local youth Pratyush Panda (26) to be the main accused. Panda held a grudge against the 53-year-old doctor because he suspected his eight-month-old nephew died due to the latter’s negligence, police said.

The infant had developed heart complications about a year and a half ago and undergone treatment at a heart hospital outside the district.

Eight months ago Panda brought his nephew to Mishra’s clinic after the infant suddenly fell ill. The child died minutes after being administered an injection.

Police said that Panda, along with two of his friends, hatched a plan to eliminate Mishra. On Sunday night, the trio followed Mishra when he was returning home and murdered him in front of his house.
