Khaitan was arrested a fortnight ago in connection with the ` 3,600crore Agusta-Westland chopper deal scam. He filed for bail last Wednesday. NEW DELHI: A Delhi court is likely to hear the Enforcement Directorate’s reply to businessman-cum-entrepreneur Gautam Khaitan’s bail application which was filed last Wednesday. Since his arrest a fortnight ago, Khaitan was in the agency’s custody and was being questioned about his role in the ` 3,600-crore AgustaWestland chopper deal bribery scam which was discovered in 2013. He was sent to judicial custody on Monday.
The bail application was moved before chief metropolitan magistrate Sanjay Khanagwal by Khaitan’s lawyer PK Dubey. At that time, the court had issued a notice to ED for October 7.
Khaitan was arrested under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act by ED, which lodged a case this July to probe alleged kickbacks in the deal signed in February 2010.
In his bail application, Khaitan said he should be enlarged on bail as he had cooperated during the investigation and there was no apprehension of his fleeing from justice. His lawyer further explained that ED’s allegation that Khaitan was on the board of Chandigarh-based company Aeromatrix — allegedly a frontfirm for the deal’s financial dealings — was misplaced as his client had resigned in October 2010.
