After the Delhi High Court was informed that the planned three-lane flyover — parallel to the existing one at Rao Tula Ram (RTR) Marg — was part of a “comprehensive project plan” for South Delhi, it asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to show a presentation of the proposed traffic and development plan on Monday.
The court of Justice Badar Durrez Ahmad and Justice Siddharth Mridul was, on Friday, informed that the new flyover was part of a plan which will affect a 50 sq km area extending from IGI Airport to Chanakyapuri.
The PWD also displayed scale models and charts of the proposed flyover, after the court had asked for clarification on the project during the last hearing.
PWD has also said that the proposed flyover will help ease traffic congestion on RTR Marg on Outer Ring Road. It said that once the new flyover comes up, the capacity of the current one will be tripled as it would be made one way. An underpass would also be built at RTR Marg, simultaneously with the new flyover, to ensure there is no hindrance to traffic. “The project includes construction of an underpass that will allow traffic flow from Defence Studies Institute to Chanakyapuri, and a road from IGI to Vasant Vihar and Vasant Kunj bypasssing Mahipalpur,” PWD counsel Ferida Satarawala said during the hearing. The bench was hearing a plea by various associations representing Vasant Vihar residents, who have opposed the PWD’s decision to build the three-lane flyover at an estimated cost of Rs 211 crore. The plea sought that a six-lane flyover be built in the same location by demolishing the existing one. However, the PWD plans to build a three-lane elevated road from Munirka to Signals Enclave, which will run parallel to the RTR Marg flyover.
