NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today gave green signal to Uttar Pradesh government to appoint 70,000 assistant teachers in primary schools on the basis of 2011 Teacher Eligibility Test on merit basis.
A bench of justices Dipak Misra and U U Lalit said all general category candidates who scored 70% marks in TET would be appointed and the cut off mark for reserved category candidates would be 65%. But, it also caveated the appointments saying these would be subject to final outcome on the pending petitions.
The UP government had challenged an Allahabad High Court order directing it to complete the process for selection of teachers, which was initiated in 2011 by then Mayawati government and was based on performance in TET. But the procedure was changed by the Akhilesh Yadav government in 2012, which included academic record of the candidates in the zone of scrutiny along with TET marks.
The change in selection procedure was challenged in the Allahabad High Court, which had struck down the SP government decision. The state had appealed against this in SC.
Considering the fact that there were around 2 lakh vacancies in teachers post in primary schools in the state, the court directed the government to start appointing on the basis of TET performance.
