Army nabs two Bodo militants in Kokrajhar district

Law Intellect IndiaGUWAHATI: A joint team of the Army’s Red Horns division and Assam Police apprehended two National Democratic Front of Boroland (Songbijit) rebels near Tipkai in Kokrajhar district on Tuesday. The sleuths found one 9 mm and one 7.62 mm pistol and live ammunition on them.

“These rebels were given the task of recruiting new cadres by the outfit in view of the ongoing operation against them in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts. They have been involved in extortion in the past,” said Lt Col Suneet Newton, PRO defence, here.

In a separate counter-insurgency operation, Army troops gunned down a member of a Karbi rebel outfit near Hemron in west Karbi Anglong district. An M16 rifle and ammunition were found on him.

On Tuesday, five Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) rebels were also arrested while carrying out extortion in the Rongsoi area along the Meghalaya-Assam border. Five pistols and ammunition were found on them.

Security forces, under the Unified Command structure in the state, have scaled up operation against militants following Bodo rebels’ attacks on Adivasi villagers on December 23, 2014. Over 70 people were killed and about three lakh displaced in the carnage.

Meanwhile, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) began extensive relief operations along the India-Bhutan border in Gorubhasha, Naharani, Saralpara and Gossaigaon in Chirang and Kokrajhar districts. Both Adivasis and Bodos have taken shelter in these camps.

“Tents, food and medicines have been provided from SSB’s stock. The relief camp at Gorubhasha has 898 people, while there are over 8,000 in the Naharani and Saralpara camps. People from both the Bodo and Adivasi communities have suffered because of militant groups,” said Nirmal Bhattacharya, assistant publicity officer, SSB.

Several commandants of SSB units and sector DIGs of Kokrajhar and Tezpur are taking stock of the scenario.

These rebels were given the task of recruiting new cadres by the outfit in view of the ongoing operation against them in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of the state.
