Supreme Court has reserved its verdict after hearing some strong objections from the Government of India.

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday in Supreme Court opposed tooth and nail any court mandated guidelines for issuance of government advertisements. Attorney general Mukul Rohatgi said government issues advertisements for making people aware of its policy and work.

He asked how such advertisements could be branded as tools to garner political mileage.

Taking note of indiscriminate advertisements released by various ministries with photographs of political leaders, the SC had appointed a high level committee which has suggested stringent guidelines to curb political mileage and patronisation of media by ruling political parties.

The AG said the government gets approval of its spendings from Parliament and its expenses were subjected to strict scrutiny by the CAG.

He said when such mechanism exists, the judiciary should not step in to formulate new guidelines for issuance of advertisements. SC reserved its verdict on PILs filed by NGOs.
