VADODARA: An accused in the 2002 Best Bakery carnage died at a hospital in Mumbai on Sunday. Jayanti Gohil, a resident of Vadodara, who was admitted to a hospital died on Sunday.
The Panigate police was informed about the death on Sunday. “We got a call on Sunday evening that Gohil was in a critical condition and they wanted the family to contact the Mumbai police. Two hours later Mumbai police called again and told us that Gohil had died,” said Panigate police inspector, S R Gamit.
According to the kin of Gohil in the city, the Mumbai police told that the deceased was suffering from a tumour for last three months. “We just got a message with a contact number that the police wanted us to call. Upon calling on the number, the police informed that Gohil had died. The police told us that he was ill for some time, but did not inform us about his medical condition till then,” claimed Jayesh Solanki, the deceased’s nephew.
Gohil (55) and his son Ramesh Gohil were arrested and tried before a local court in connection with the Best Bakery case before being acquitted. But when the Supreme Court ordered a retrial, the duo fled and were untraceable.
In May 2013, Gohil and Ramesh were arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from Kashipura of Waghodia taluka. The NIA was looking for them in connection with their involvement in the 2007 Ajmer Sharif blast. As many as 14 people were killed by a mob in the Best Bakery carnage over a decade ago.
