MUMBAI: After having renamed Bombay as Mumbai during its rule in Maharashtra in the 90s, Shiv Sena, which is an ally of BJP in the state and the Centre, is now vehemently pressing for its demand to rename the HC and IIT-B.
Sena MP Arvind Sawant said he had taken up the matter with Union law minister Sadananda Gowda. “I will demand that all government institutions like IIT-Bombay should be replaced with Mumbai,” said Sawant.
The Sena leader said the city derived its name from Goddess Mumbadevi. “However, the name Bombay was coined by the British as they could not pronounce Mumbai,” he added. The Sena’s move has been criticized by the Congress. “Before joining the government, they portrayed themselves as the messiah of peasants and wanted the BJP to stop farmer suicides and provide them adequate compensation,” said Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, the leader of opposition.
