Court dismisses bail plea of extortion accused, says his crime heinous

images (9)A local court on Monday dismissed the bail application of Rattan Lubana, one of the gang of three unemployed youths who were arrested for blackmail and extorting money from students of some high-end schools in the city last month.
Civil Judge Senior Division K K Jain, while dismissing Lubana’s application, held that his crime was heinous.
Lubana’s accomplices Amitoj Singh and Rajbir Singh have not yet applied for bail and are in jail.
The police had arrested the trio from the parking area of St. John’s School on January 16 following a complaint from the school principal after the matter was brought to her notice by some students and their parents.
The gang used to befriend students, take them out to movies, parties, hookah bars and other places, shoot their photos and use these to blackmail them and extort money.
Opposing Lubana’s bail application, the police said he had contact details of 26 school students, Amitoj had 24 numbers and Rajbir had numbers of 124 school students who were being harassed by them. These students are from DAV School in Sector 15, DPS School, St. John’s School, Khalsa School in Sector 26, Strawberry Fields School and Vivek High School.
The police said that the accused had threatened to sexually exploit the students if they did not give them money. Some children had stolen liquor and other items from their homes to meet the demands of the accused.
In his application, Lubana had claimed that he was being framed in the case to defame his father who was a politician. But the police said Lubana was an influential person who could influence investigation, and statements of some students were yet to be recorded.
Police said Rattan Lubana was involved in a firing incident outside the Buzz lounge in Sector 17 last year. His father is a member of the BJP and former president of the market committee of Sector 26. Amitoj is a graduate and son of a sub-inspector in Punjab Police who died a few years ago. Rajbir, a resident of Dera Bassi and college drop-out, is the son of a constable with the Chandigarh Police.
