The Delhi government is all set to ensure that Chinese crackers, which flooded the market during Diwali last year, will not be sold in the city this time. It has also banned the use of fire crackers between 10 pm and 6 am.

Those who continue bursting crackers till late might land in soup. “Strict action is to be taken against violators, especially those who continue to burst crackers even after warnings,” states the directions issued to departments involved in checking sound and pollution control levels.

Officials of Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) said containers carrying these banned Chinese crackers were seized at ICD Tuglaqabad. Notice regarding the same has already been sent to them, officials said.

“Samples have also being seized from Sadar Bazaar and Jama Masjid areas. Random checking in godowns should ensure complete ban on Chinese crackers. PESO should ensure that detailed information, specifically on chemical content and sound level of firecrackers, is mentioned on the box by manufacturers. Delhi Police to ensure that fire crackers are not set off beyond 10 pm,” the directive states.

The government also directed that the number of licenses issued to shops selling fire crackers should not exceed that of last year.

In order to spread awareness among children against the use of crackers, the department has also roped in three colleges — Hindu, Swami Shraddhanand and Bhagat Singh — to perform a street play in 2,000 schools.
