BHUBANESWAR: In an election case, the Orissa high court on Friday issued notice to senior BJD leader Rabi Narayan Nanda to explain in three weeks why criminal proceedings should not be initiated against him for filing a false affidavit.
Nanda had filed a petition challenging the election of Tara Prasad Bahinipati of Congress from Jeypore assembly constituency. Nanda was scheduled to be examined in the case, but moved a petition seeking exemption on the ground that he was unwell and had been advised bed rest for one-and-a- half month.
“The medical certificate was issued by Jeypore sub-divisional medical officer, who is a gynaecologist. The certificate mentions that the petitioner had severe hypertension with angina and lungs infections,” senior counsel Pitambara Acharya for Bahinipati said, adding “a periphery doctor as per rule has no power to advise bed rest for more than 10 days”. On November 17, the court imposed Rs 5,000 fine on Nanda while rejecting his amendment petition to add certain facts in his original petition. tnn
