Widespread attacks and protests erupted across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday soon after the Karnataka High Court rejected former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s bail plea. The protesters targeted vehicles with Karnataka registration numbers and business establishments owned by people from the neighbouring state.
At the party headquarters here, a dozen AIADMK ministers and senior leaders gathered in front of the television. “We will approach the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court before moving the Supreme Court,” said a senior party leader.
The Data Udipi hotel in Chennai, reportedly owned by a Karnataka group, was attacked by a group of AIADMK supporters. Police also confirmed at least half-a-dozen incidents of attacks and stone pelting on vehicles with Karnataka registration numbers and Karnataka Transport Corporation buses in Trichy, Salem and Dindigul.
Protesters also stopped several Karnataka buses and vehicles in Ooty. Bus services in Hosur, near the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, were suspended by evening. Breaking his week-long silence, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam asked the public to refrain from any kind of violence, protests, closure of shops and bandhs. “Puratchi Thalaivi Amma is against any activity that will cause inconvenience to the public,” he said. He appealed to party supporters to work to achieve Jayalalithaa’s dreams, including the ‘Vision 2023’ and Industrial Policy 2014. Earlier in the day, posters appeared in the name of AIADMK South Chennai leadership, threatening that people from Karnataka would be held hostage if bail was denied to Jayalalithaa. A senior police officer said there was complete inaction and apathy in monitoring the protests and violence. “Following several such complaints, DGP K Ramanujam intervened personally on Tuesday,” the officer said.
