CHENNAI: Madras high court has ordered a CBI probe into the alleged custodial torture and rape of a woman, who was picked up by Udumalpet police on August 11 in connection with a murder case.

Justice V Ramasubramanian, passing orders on a writ petition filed by Girija (name changed), daughter of the torture victim, also awarded Rs 2 lakh as interim compensation to the woman.

The case shall be investigated by a superintendent of police-level officer, he further said on Wednesday. Tirupur sessios cout shall take a decision on the victim-woman’s bail plea within a week, he said.

According to Girija, her mother was picked up by Udumalpet police on August 11 as a suspect, a day after her landlady was found murdered in the town. Her arrest, however, was accounted for only on August 14. During the three days, seven policemen of Udumalpet station subjected her to torture and they even inserted lathis into her private parts. The offence is rape punishable under Section 275 and 276 IPC, she said, seeking medical treatment for her mother and action against her tormentors.

After admitting the matter for hearing earlier this month, Justice Ramasubramanian had directed the woman to be produced in court. Later, he referred her to the government multi super-specialty hospital here for treatment. Since then she has been under treatment at the government facility.

Her counsel Purushothaman also sought continuation of treatment besides psychiatric counseling for the traumatized custodial torture victim.
