BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday asked the state government to specify by February 25 its stand on obeying the May 2014 Supreme Court order on medium of instruction.
Justice B V Nagarathna gave this direction while hearing a petition filed by the Associated Managements of Government Recognized English Medium Schools in Karnataka (KAMS) challenging the November 11, 2014 notification which doesn’t provide for English medium for classes 1 to 5.
The judge noted that as on date, the Supreme Court verdict under Article 141 is binding on both the state government and the high court.
The government advocate informed the high court that the state has preferred a curative petition before the apex court and the same is pending. He sought some more time on the count.
Notice to govt on water to Pavagada: A division bench headed by Chief Justice D H Waghela on Thursday issued notice to the government and the Tumakuru district administration in response to a PIL seeking clean drinking water and health facilities in Pavagada taluk. The taluk, located near the state’s boundary with Andhra, suffers from high fluoride contamination.
D A Amarnath, a resident of Ponnasamundra in Pavagada taluk, has claimed that the authorities have not taken any effective/concrete steps to mitigate the hardship of residents of 156 villages despite an order of the court in January 2014.
