NEW DELHI: The CBI’s failure to trace a 26-year-old woman, who disappeared from a police station two years ago, has earned the ire of the Delhi High Court. The court castigated the premier investigating agency for dragging its feet as some police officials are “strong suspects” in the case.
“The woman went missing after she was picked up by police. We had handed over the case to you (CBI). What are you doing?” a division bench of Justice Ravindra Bhatt and Justice Vipin Sanghi remarked and asked the CBI to file a status report, indicating the steps taken by it to trace the woman.
“How do you investigate normally? If you have not registered the name of the accused in the FIR, what kind of an investigation is this?” the court said, adding that it had transferred the case to the CBI expecting an “independent” probe.
The remark came after the CBI’s counsel told the court that it had registered an FIR against “unknown persons” and the woman has not been traced yet. The bench concurred that there was “reluctance” on the CBI’s part in naming the accused police officials, which was “unacceptable”.
The court had earlier transferred the investigation from Delhi Police to the CBI while taking into note the submission of the victim’s father, Ram Prasad that the police department would never bring the culprits to book as the suspects are police personnel themselves.
A woman had gone missing from Pul Prahladpur police station on May 23, 2012. The PCR official had picked up the woman after the manager of a local tailoring hub complained her of picking a fight. The woman went missing from the police station the same day and has not been found till date.
