NEW DELHI: The suspension of detention order for 26/11 mastermind Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi by Islamabad High Court on Monday sparked another round of outrage in India with New Delhi telling Pakistan that it was refusing to learn even from the recent barbaric killing of children in Peshawar.
Foreign secretary Sujatha Singh summoned Pakistani high commissioner Abdul Basit to say that the suspension of Lakhvi’s detention had made a mockery of the assurances India had been receiving from Pakistan over issues related to terror.

Lakhvi had last week been granted bail by the anti-terrorism court conducting the trial of 26/11 Pakistani accused but was later detained by local authorities under a maintenance of public order law. Lakhvi challenged the detention in the high court which suspended the detention notification, bringing relief to one of the main 26/11 handlers.
Singh also expressed ire at the fact that not enough was done by the prosecution to appeal against the bail order of the anti-terrorism court.
Following the barbaric carnage of Peshawar, Singh told Basit, India had hoped to see action on the part of the Pakistani establishment and a change in attitude towards terror in all its forms. The recent events do not provide evidence of this, she added. It is learnt that Basit reiterated the Pakistan government’s position that it has no control over the judiciary.
“The foreign secretary conveyed strong concern at the lack of effective action by Pakistan’s prosecuting authorities after the anti-terrorism court ordered the release of internationally designated terrorist Zakir-ur Rehman Lakhvi, whose involvement in the Mumbai terror attack is well known,” said the government in a statement.
“It was once again conveyed that we expect the Government of Pakistan to abide by the commitment conveyed to us, including at the highest level, that expeditious steps would be taken to bring all those responsible for the heinous acts of terrorism in Mumbai to justice and that it was extremely disturbing that despite the assurances we have been receiving over the last 6 years, and the recent tragedies in Pakistan, there seems to be no end in sight to Pakistan remaining a safe haven for well known terror groups,” it added.
