Tamil Nadu moves SC against Kerala over Pambar dam

o-panneershelvamCHENNAI: Tamil Nadu government on Friday moved Supreme Court with a prayer to restrain Kerala government from proceeding with the construction of a dam across river Pambar at Pattissery, a tributary of river Amaravathy.

In its petition, the government also sought status quo of the project and not to proceed with the execution of any project, which are not in consonance with the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

“If the capacity of the proposed dam at Pattissery itself is 2tmcft, as reported in the media, the utilisation is likely to be much more and the total utilisation in the Pambar basin, including other projects is likely to exceed the allocations made by the tribunal which would ultimately affect the irrigation downstream under the Amaravathy Irrigation project,” the petition said.

In spite of letters to the Union ministry of water resources, Kerala government and PM, the Centre has not given any directions to Kerala that would deter it from proceeding with projects not contemplated in the final decision of the Tribunal. In spite of the request already made by Tamil Nadu, the Kerala government has not furnished full information about the projects in the Pambar sub-basin, the petition added.
